How to Fix a Noisy Hot Water Tank in Your Home?

What is a Hot Water Tank?

A hot water tank or hot water heater is actually a large water-filled tank. This tank comprise of heating mechanism inside it which is either powered by electricity, oil, gas, or solar power. The tank is made of metal along with a protective liner which prevents it against corroding.
It also contains a layer of insulation and the final outside layer to hold it all together. A typical hot water tank can hold 180 to 225 liters of water.

What should you do when your hot water tank start making noises?

Getting noises coming from your residential hot water tank can be a dangerous sign, and can perturb your house peacefulness. At times, it might produce a roaring or rumbling sound, or a loud hammering or knocking sound.
Following are the few steps that can help you fix noisy hot water tank in your house;
1.       The primary step to fix a rumbling sound coming out of hot water tank is, flush out all debris collected in the tank bottom. If it runs on fuel, then set the gas control on the pilot setting, and if it runs on electricity, then switch off the circuit breaker that powers the tank.

2.       Close cold water supply in your tank by closing its valves. No matter whether your tank runs on gas or electricity, there’s always a valve present on one of the two thin pipes which come from the top of the tank. There is usually handle given to turn, or you can also use a wrench.

3.       Now, connect the pipe to your tank’s drain valve, which will be on the small plug at the bottom of the tank. Turn on the hot water at a sink near the tank, so you won’t get an air gap in the heater. Turn the handle, and open the tank’s drain valve. Give the tank a chance to deplete into a pail or tub, until the point that the water getting through the hose runs clear.

4.       Turn off the valve, if it didn’t close completely, it means it has gone moderately blocked due to debris. Take your hose top and join it firmly to the valve. On the off chance that the top doesn't have an inward gasket, use Teflon rod plumbing tape, and wrap it around valve threads, then fasten on the cap.

5.       Now, turn on the cold water and fill the water heater again. Let the hot water valve on at the sink as it refills. (Do check, the water coming out this moment will be chilled). When it turns into hot water then close it. Set the gas control to “On” again.

6.       Take water pressure gauge, and check the pressure in your hot water tank. If it is still making a rushing or sloshing sound, then check the pressure again. When the tank stays quiet after been running for a few minutes, then open hot water at a neighboring sink to make the heater work.

7.       Change the gauge pointer to make it line up with the pressure-reading needle. Turn the tank's indoor regulator go down to its ordinary level, with the goal that the radiator begins running once more.

8.       Keep on looking at pressure gauge. If you see high pressure above 80 psi, then open temperature and pressure relief valve, which has most likely been spilling. This will be on the highest point of the tank, interfacing with a thin pipe that goes down along the body of the tank.

9.       Keep on opening and closing the valve to check if it stops leaking on its own or not. Replace T&P valve if keep on leaking. A working weight alleviation valve enables the weight in the tank to get away.
